My bucket list for travels has always included a "sit down" with the gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda, Congo or wherever I could manage. An invitation to go to Indonesia to see and be with the orphaned orangutans presented itself not long ago. And, Jane Goodall is a personal hero. This book is a natural for someone who cares about our natural world, endangered species, and those who give their lives to be a part of the efforts to study and save these various species. I have shared the book with others in an effort to promote these causes. It is doubtful that I will get to these areas of the world--verdict is still out on that. Living vicariously may be the way for me. This book has allowed that. And the three women who are the focal points in WALKING WITH THE GREAT APES have been and are amazing.

I've not read this as of this date, Sye Montgomery writes with a wry sense of humor...while educating the reader on those beings we share our planet with.

Sy Montgomery did a good job of showing how similar chimps, gorillas and orangutans are to humans. Each of Leaky's "primates", Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas were transformed by their relationships with these great apes. What they learned changed our understanding of what it means to be human. They also raise questions about what is possible to learn of these animal through unstructured observation and gaining their trust rather than by rote data collecting.
